Romanian village rolls out record flag

A Romanian village has unfurled what villages say is the largest flag ever made, in a Guinness World Records bid. It took about 200 people several hours today to roll out the flag, which organisers say measured 330 metres (1,090 feet) by 220 metres (725 feet), about three times the size of a football field. The five-ton flag was displayed in Clinceni ,22 miles, south east of Bucharest. Workers struggled to keep it firmly planted on the ground because of windy conditions and had to use small sandbags. Adrian Dragomir, manager of the Flags Factory which created the flag, says it took weeks to sew and 70 kilometres (44 miles) of thread was needed. Prime Minister Victor Ponta and other ministers will visit the flag later.

Economic Affairs Minister Chris Cardona this evening denied that the government had requested the resignation of Antonio Ghigo, chairman of the Malta Communications Authority, although it eventually accepted the resignation. Replying to questions by a number of Nationalist MPs including the Leader of the Opposition, Dr Cardona said the resignation was requested by the former permanent secretary in a letter dated March 12. “I did not know of the letter, I could not have known of this letter since the Cabinet had not been appointed by that date, and we were not yet ministers,” Dr Cardona said. The resignation, he added, was voluntary and was accepted. Opposition leader Simon Busuttil asked the minister not to mislead the House, insisting that the Labour government was responsible on March 12. When Dr Busuttil read the letter asking Dr Ghigo to resign, Dr Cardona requested a copy and insisted again that the permanent secretary had issued it “behind our backs”. In the letter, he observed, the permanent secretary had told all chairmen within the ministry to resign ‘as is customary’ with a change of government. He had also referred to a circular by the former principal permanent...

Updated 10.13 p.m. The Speaker of the House of Representatives this evening upheld a complaint by Nationalist MP Tonio Fenech following an exchange with the prime minister, saying that Dr Muscat could have made a better choice of words. Speaker Anglu Farrugia delivered his ruling two-and-a-half hours after the sitting was suspended, with Mr Fenech demanding a retraction or apology from Dr Muscat. The exchange took place when Dr Muscat referred to a meeting which Mr Fenech had had with a delegation from the International Monetary Fund, speaking of 'incitement' by the Nationalist MP Mr Fenech denied wrongdoing and demanded an apology. He  said that in terms of standing orders, no one could impute bad motives on an MP. He insisted that in a regular meeting with the IMF delegation, one of the sort frequently requested by the IMF, he had defended Malta's banking system and the financial situation, although he had said that the government did not seem as committed as before to rein in the deficit. He hoped, he said, that Malta was not returning to the Mintoff days where anyone who criticised the government was labelled a traitor. Dr Muscat stood his ground, saying the government knew...

On burying offending words

Those who lived through the 1970s and the 1980s still remember with great unpleasantness (and this is an understatement) the use of the word tixwiex (incitement) and xewwiexi. This was one of the favourite insults/threats forming part of the Mintoffian vocabulary. It was a blanket threat hurled at all kinds of critics and criticisms of the government. Journalists were called xewwiexa. The same happened to anyone who discussed with the foreign media what was happening in Malta. The members of the Opposition were, quite naturally, the xewwiexa par excellence. As I noted, the term was not just an insult. It was also a threat that on more than one occasion was translated into action. The use of the word evidenced the belief that the government and the nation were one and the same thing. If you criticised the government you were considered to be against the nation. The country has collectively moved light years away from this kind of political atmosphere. It is therefore very unfortunate that the word has been resurrected once more. L-Orizzont has used it on more than one occasion. This paper has made it a habit of using words and expressions that are unnecessarily harsh and downright...

The father of a 32-year-old woman has filed a judicial protest against the Minister of Health, claiming that as a direct result of doctors' negligence at Mater Dei Hospital, his daughter had died of meningitis. Ritianne Muscat passed away on April 14, two days after she called at the hospital complaining of severe ear ache. Her father, Raymond Muscat, said his daughter was seen by a doctor, who then sent her home. Two days after, she was found dead in her apartment in St Paul's Bay. The cause of death was A1 meningitis. Mr Muscat said the doctors who had seen his daughter were guilty of gross negligence. Had they given her the proper attention and medication, she would not have died, he said in his protest. Mr Muscat said that despite having contacted the Health Ministry, he did not know what was being done about the case. He had however been given an appointment to meet the minister on June 25. He called for a magisterial inquiry to establish the way the doctors had handled the case. Dr Edward Gatt signed the protest.

A dishwasher was accused in court today with having groped a 19-year-old  waitress in an incident two days ago at  the La Valette Resort, where they work in Paceville. Ibrahim Ali, 30, from the Ivory Coast, who has lived in Malta for the past eight years, was accused of violent indecent assault. He pleaded not guilty. Police Inspector Luke Bonello said that the victim, a Maltese woman, had told the police that he had tried to pull off her blouse and had groped her breasts. He was arrested shortly after. The victim said that this was not the first time that she had been groped and asked for sex by the accused. The accused denied that he had done anything wrong and said he was only joking like he and done before with other colleagues. Lawyer Andrew Sciberras requested bail arguing that the accused was not going to abscond since he had lived in Malta for many years and worked here. Inspector Bonello said that the only problem was that the accused and the victim work in the same place. Magistrate Anthony Vella granted bail against a personal guarantee of €2,000. He also issued  a protection order for the victim.
