Tens of thousands of members of Italy's youth-driven Sardine Movement on Saturday rallied in Rome, as part of their campaign to battle xenophobia and shake up the country's politics. The "Sardines" have become a symbol of protest against far-right firebrand leader Matteo Salvini, who served as interior minister and deputy prime minister in Italy's previous coalition government and cracked down on immigration. In Rome's immense San Giovanni Square, retiree Roberto Piperno was among those joining the crowd, which sang the anti-fascist anthem Bella Ciao, a staple of the movement's demonstrations. He turned out because he did not want to see "hatred propagated" and to do nothing would make him "ashamed to be Italian", he said. Taking aim at "populism", 32-year-old Mattia Santori, a founder of the movement, told the crowd the idea was to "bring out a new energy through a much freer and more spontaneous form" than a traditional political party "that will not be hierarchical" but would instead set "broad directions". One demonstrator held up a giant sardine model, while others brandished drawings and posters. The movement, only a month old, started in Bologna when a rally organised by...

Teacher Analise Cassar Farrugia speaks to students in the ‘Dealing with the home’ class. Photos: Matthew Mirabelli

At a time when teenage boys in Malta are navigating terms like “toxic masculinity” and “gender equality”, two teachers are helping to prepare them for the future. Analise Cassar Farrugia and Kelly Azzopardi have designed a syllabus called ‘Dealing with the home’ at St Paul’s Missionary College in Rabat. The weekly two-hour class allows teens aged 13 to 15 to learn basic life skills, such as how to wash and iron their clothes, as well as manage everything from personal hygiene to personal finances. “We tried to find something that has never been done before,” says English teacher Analise. “So we developed a syllabus around the general duties that are needed to run a home.” The women came up with the idea as part of the school’s ethos of including a non-academic activity in the curriculum on Thursday afternoons. While some boys chose swimming or chess, eight picked ‘Dealing with the home.’ “We wanted to move away from the idea that women should be the ones doing all the housework,” says Kelly. “We wanted our students to understand that many women are now also working and that jobs at home need to be split up equally. What we found by speaking to the boys is that many of them do...

Monterrey's Rogelio Funes Mori (left) is marked by Sadd's midfielder Boualem Khoukhi.

Mexican side Monterrey booked a glamour World Club Cup semi-final clash with European champions Liverpool after seeing off Qatar's Al Sadd 3-2 on Saturday. Leonel Vangioni put Monterrey ahead after 23 minutes with a spectacular 30-yard strike which went in off the post. They were 2-0 ahead by half-time after Al Sadd, coached by former Barcelona star Xavi, saw skipper Gabi play a mistimed back pass into the path of Rogelio Funes Mori who went on to score. Algerian international Baghdad Bounedjah brought the Qataris back into the game just after the hour with a header from 12 yards. However, Monterrey restored their two-goal cushion after 77 minutes when a fierce drive from Carlos Rodriguez went in off the crossbar. Abdelkarim Hassan's 25-yard shot in the last minute gave Al Sadd brief hopes of a shock turnaround but Monterrey held on. The Mexicans will face runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool in the second semi-final on Wednesday. The first semi-final on Tuesday will feature Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal against Flamengo of Brazil.   Monterrey - Al - Sadd Live Score

Government agencies fail to uphold the law despite mounting fines

Transport Malta’s illegal billboard which the Planning Authority has ordered to be removed.

Three government agencies have so far ignored requests from the Planning Authority to remove an illegal electronic billboard placed on one of Malta’s main thoroughfares. According to an enforcement order issued last June and stuck onto the unauthorised billboard in Mdina Road, Attard, last week, the Planning Authority ordered Transport Malta, Infrastructure Malta and the Lands Authority to come in line with the law and remove the massive billboard. The three authorities, which all fall under the political direction of Transport Minister Ian Borg, are being charged daily fines until they uphold the law, which so far have added up to over €3,000. The fines will soon increase to €50 a day if the three public authorities insist on ignoring the law. Asked to state why the three public authorities under his remit are ignoring the law and whether he has directed them to come in line and remove the illegal billboard, Dr Borg did not reply. Ironically, the electronic billboard, which has also been connected to the electricity grid despite not having a permit, is ‘advertising’ one of Dr Borg’s upcoming road infrastructure projects, known as the Central Link Project. Dr Borg has seen...

The chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, which acts as a gateway to Ħamrun, sits at the apex of the central house of the Society of Christian Doctrine, more popularly known as the MUSEUM. The chapel, which is circular in plan, shares a wall with the Society’s large elliptical auditorium: seen together on plan, one is reminded of an architectural exclamation mark! Although the buildings that make up the headquarters of the Society of Christian Doctrine were built in the middle of the 20th century the chapel was redecorated in 2001 to the designs of Prof. Richard England in preparation for the reception of the sacred remains of San Ġorġ Preca before his beatification and the visit of Pope John Paul II in May 2001. The chapel is the resting place of San Ġorġ Preca, Malta’s first saint of modern times, canonised by Pope Benedict XVI on June 3, 2007. More recently, the Society commissioned the architectural practice Atelier Maison to renovate the 750-seat auditorium adjacent to the chapel. Atelier Maison...

Floriana claim spoils in Old Firm derby

SLIEMA WANDERERS 1 Mintoff 54 FLORIANA 2 Fonesca 3, Busuttil 69 Floriana's defiant start to the campaign continued unabated yesterday with a composed performance over rivals Sliema Wanderers and in the process cranking up the pressure on their pursuers as they go six points clear at the top of the standings. Such is their form this season, still unbeaten and with nine wins from 12 games that there is a growing sense of destiny about the Floriana's season. But still they have to be cautious as the target is some way away. Floriana's ascendancy over Sliema was beyond question yesterday despite a 2-1 scoreline might indicate otherwise. The Greens' win over their 'old rivals' was a distinct possibility on the strength of the teams' form but Sliema appeared to have the qualities to fend off the challenge of the Premier league leaders after their 2-1 victory over Birkikara last week. Yet Floriana's superior work-rate and craft, which had not been so conspicious yesterday took its toll on fastly ailing Sliema. Floriana started at blistering speed and were ahead inside the first three minutes. Diego Venancio sent in a dangerous free-kick and Tiago Fonesca got behind the Sliema defence...

Teenager Greenwood rescues Man Utd in Everton draw

Mason Greenwood came off the bench to rescue Manchester United as the teenage striker's late equaliser secured a 1-1 draw against Everton on Sunday. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side fell behind to Victor Lindelof's controversial first half own-goal after United's appeals for a foul on David de Gea were ignored by VAR. But Greenwood, introduced in the second half, underlined his vast potential with a clinical strike 13 minutes from full-time. The 18-year-old is the third youngest player to score a Premier League goal at Old Trafford after former United forwards Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck. Bradford-born Greenwood, a product of United's youth academy, now has seven goals in his breakthrough season after netting twice in his previous appearance against Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday. This was his second Premier League goal after his strike against Sheffield United in November and his rapid progress is a bright spot in a difficult season for Solskjaer's sixth placed team. It was fitting that Greenwood scored in the 4,000th senior match in succession in which at least one youth graduate was represented in United's first-team or matchday squad, an extraordinary record...

President has moral duty to act, says former chief justice

Vincent de Gaetano.

The President has the moral authority, even the moral duty, to denounce the erosion of the constitutional morality, according to former chief justice Vincent de Gaetano. “I have very little patience with those who say that the president has very little power under the Constitution,” Dr de Gaetano says in an interview with The Sunday Times of Malta. On Friday, President George Vella said  a “gang of people” had brought shame on the country, which has been shocked with revelations linked to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder. Dr de Gaetano says: “Apart from the fact that certain powers and duties are necessarily implied – like the power to remove a prime minister, or, indeed, any minister, when their position becomes, for any valid reason, untenable – the president certainly has the moral authority, and I would say the moral duty, to stand up and denounce whatever could be eroding the ‘constitutional morality’ of the country or undermining its institutions.” In his view, what Malta is experiencing is an ‘institutional’ crisis as the problem also affects organs and actors not specifically emanating from the Constitution, like the police, political parties and the many regulatory...

Tottenham up to fifth after late win at Wolves

Jan Vertonghen's stoppage time header continued Tottenham's turnaround under Jose Mourinho as Spurs moved up to fifth with a 2-1 win at Wolves. Mourinho's men were largely outplayed at Molineux, but were ruthless with their chances to inflict Wolves' first league defeat in 12 games. Adama Traore's spectacular strike had cancelled out Lucas Moura's early opener before Vertonghen stooped to guide home Christan Eriksen's corner. Spurs can now move into the top four before Christmas if they beat Chelsea at home next weekend. That speaks volumes for the impact Mourinho has made in less than a month in charge as Tottenham trailed Chelsea and the top four by 12 points when he was appointed. Wolves drop to eighth as their longest unbeaten run in the top flight since 1962 came to an end, but there was little more Nuno Espirito Santo's men could have done to at least avoid defeat. After an industrious start by Wolves, it was Spurs who scored after eight minutes. Son Heung-min's drive was beaten away by Rui Patricio but the ball was worked to Moura, who glided into the area before rifling in high from an angle for his third goal in seven games under Mourinho. Wolves remained undaunted...

Joe Cassar: Anton Grasso40 sena ta’ waħx... u aktarHorizons Publications 2018 All Anton Grasso’s books are unusual. This volume, a sort of anthology containing prose and poetic writings by Grasso, appreciations by people who know the author, photos, selected or taken by Annette Apap, and superbly edited by the seasoned journalist Joe Cassar for Horizons, is the most unusual of them all. You don’t have to open the book to come face to face with its atypical presentation. The cover is notable enough to strike you as another remarkable book, albeit with its own peculiarities. In fact, it is a book with the cover itself as an incipit. The title, Anton Grasso – 40 Sena ta’ Waħx u aktar, the close-up portrait photo (a penetrating, almost inquisitive and covertly narcissistic look), and the design (sombre yet not ponderous), all contribute to catch your attention. The different yet unifying aspects of this volume, breathe and speak on their own terms, portraying Grasso, the author and the man. The first part contains also a short yet in-depth portrait of the author by his friend Joe Cassar, and an obligato intrusion by the author, comprises recollections and reviews of the man by Doris...

Valletta hold off brave Ħamrun's rally

Valletta weathered a second-half fightback from Ħamrun Spartans to put their league aspirations back on track with a hard-fought victory which earned them the second spot alongside Gżira United and six points adrift of leaders Floriana. As it turned out, a tactically well-deployed Ħamrun Spartans were only just denied of the spoils against their more-fancied opponents. They had upped their game considerably in the second period to reduce Valletta to struggling lot. Although Valletta had been the more positive outfit in the first part of the game. their goalkeeper Henry Bonello had to pull of a couple of fine saves to keep his net intact. Quiet, unproductive exchanges marked the opening minutes. Neither side was able to make any headway with custodians at both ends remaining idle. Darren Abdilla, Valletta's coach, must have been confident that the Lilywhites would pick maximum spoils with Mario Fontanella and Matteo Piciollo leading the forward line, it seemed simply a matter of time before one of the two would draw first blood. But in reality, their Italian forward line blotted out in the first half and the only menace came from a bold run of Enmy Pena Beltre on the cusp of...

Dazzling De Bruyne ensures City bounce back at Arsenal

Kevin De Bruyne scored twice and teed up Raheem Sterling for Manchester City's other goal as Arsenal crumbled to another humiliating 3-0 home defeat on Sunday. Victory sees City close the gap on runaway leaders Liverpool back to 14 points and edge to within four of second-placed Leicester, who they host next weekend. Arsenal, on the other hand, remain ninth on the back of just one win in their last 12 games in all competitions. That victory came at West Ham on Monday, but if there was any hope a corner had been turned under caretaker boss Freddie Ljungberg for the Gunners, it was quickly quashed by the brilliant De Bruyne. Arsenal could have taken the lead even before the Belgian opened the scoring after just 90 seconds. Gabriel Martinelli retained his place ahead of Alexandre Lacazette after scoring for the first time in the Premier League on Monday and got the better of Fernandinho and Nicolas Otamendi to muscle his way in on goal before his shot was blocked by Ederson. City broke straight up the other end and Gabriel Jesus's low cross picked out De Bruyne to stroke the ball into the roof of the net. Pep Guardiola's men had been ruthlessly cut apart on the counter-attack in...

Comparing Richard Cachia Caruana to Keith Schembri 'unacceptable' - Busuttil

Richard Cachia Caruana.

Simon Busuttil has slammed Education Minister Evarist Bartolo for having drawn comparisons between Keith Schembri  and Richard Cachia Caruana, chief of staff of Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami who was stabbed 25 years ago this Wednesday. In an early morning Facebook post on Sunday, Mr Bartolo said two of Malta’s last three prime ministers had a chief of staff who was too powerful, akin to a chief of government. He insisted that there could only by one prime minister at the Auberge de Castille, the one elected democratically. No one else should be allowed to weave a network of power in various sectors which ended up stronger than the national institutions. “To try to compare Richard Cachia Caruana to a criminal such as Keith Schembri (Joseph Muscat’s former chief of staff) is totally unacceptable,” Dr Busuttil wrote on Facebook. “While Richard Cachia Caruana will go down in history as one of the public officers who best served the country, Keith Schembri will be remembered as a criminal who served himself of the country.” He recalled that Mr Cachia Caruana, together with Dr Fenech Adami had transformed the country from the third world state it was in 1987. With Foreign Minister...

Members of the Malta Developers Association have organised a petition to try convince their long-standing president, Sandro Chetcuti, to stay at the helm of the lobby group. During the MDA’s annual general meeting earlier this year, Mr Chetcuti said this was his last year at the MDA as he had decided to move on. Mr Chetcuti told members that after 10 years as MDA president it was time for the association to find a replacement. However, as the industry has started to slow following years of impressive growth, members of the MDA are urging Mr Chetcuti to reverse his decision. “His (Chetcuti’s) departure would come at a bad time for the industry and we really need him to stay on. Due to the current political turmoil and uncertainty, our industry will be facing serious challenges in the coming months and we need someone strong at the helm,” a member of the council told The Sunday Times of Malta. When contacted, the secretary of the MDA, Michael Stivala, admitted that Mr Chetcuti has repeated his intention to step down from the association during a number of council meetings. Mr Chetcuti did not wish to comment, when contacted, but said intends to step down. Perceived by many as...

The Malta police force was in mourning on Sunday for constable Ryan Tonna, a 36-year-old athlete who choked while having a meal after taking part in a marathon in Pisa, Italy. Tonna served in the Drug Squad and was praised by colleagues as ‘an examplary officer’. "His change in lifestyle to an athletic one inspired many who do not believe in themselves as being capable of such a change. Although we still cannot believe such a loss, we know your inspiration will continue,” the Simon Schembri Foundation tweeted. The foundation was set up by traffic policeman Simon Schembri after he was run-over by a motorist he had stopped last year.   Constable Tonna too used to work as a traffic policeman. PC Tonna is survived by a young son.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Juventus beat Udinese 3-1 to join Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A table on Sunday after Antonio Conte's side were held 1-1 at Fiorentina. Dusan Vlahovic snatched a point for Fiorentina two minutes into injury time to frustrate Inter Milan who had led following Borja Valero's opener after eight minutes in Tuscany. Both Juventus and Inter Milan have 39 points from 16 games, with Antonio Conte's side ahead on goal difference. Ronaldo struck twice in the first half to make it five goals in four games as the reigning champions got back winning after last weekend's first defeat of the season to Lazio. "That's how we have to play, with confidence," said Ronaldo. The Portuguese star tapped in a Paulo Dybala rebound after nine minutes at the Allianz Stadium, and burst through to finish off a Gonzalo Higuain cross on 36 minutes. Leonardo Bonucci sealed the three points just before the break when he headed in from close range. Ignacio Pussetto pulled a goal back for 17th-placed Udinese four minutes into injury time with his close range effort beating Gianluigi Buffon in the Juventus goal. "It is the first time after a Champions League match that we...
