The charity campaign launched as a cooperative effort between Persona Med-Aesthetic Centre and SkinCeuticals has ended successfully, collecting €2,400 for Hospice Malta. President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca inaugurated the SkinCeuticals Charity Event in aid of Hospice Malta and the Maltese Association of Dermatology and Venereology on January 16. Persona hosted the event, marking the introduction of some exciting new products to their SkinCeuticals range. To mark this special evening, Persona donated 20 per cent of proceeds on the night to Hospice Malta together with a donation made to MADV for its efforts towards skin cancer awareness campaigns. The other part of the SkinCeuticals charity campaign lasted all year, with a percentage of 2015 SkinCeuticals sales going to Hospice Malta. “The goal of Hospice Malta is to continue to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. It is thanks to similar acts of solidarity that we have been able to continue with our mission of providing free palliative care to patients suffering from cancer, motor neuron disease, respiratory, cardiac and renal diseases,” said Anabel Spiteri, fundraising coordinator of Hospice...

The following are the top stories in the Maltese newspapers. The Sunday Times of Malta says former parliamentary secretary Michael Falzon used his political discretion to approve another €370,000 payment to the Gaffarenas at the same time as the controversial dealings on the Valletta property.  Although never mentioned by the government, the National Audit Office accidentally stumbled upon a payment made to Joe Gaffarena just days before the €3.4 million deal struck with his son, Mark, on the Valletta property. The Malta Independent says the President is feeling uncomfortable in being a rubber stamp for property expropriations. MaltaToday says Michael Falzon continues to be defiant in accusing the National Audit Office of political manipulation. It also reports that inflated fish landings statistics have sparked fears that the fishing industry is being used for other purposes, such as smuggling. Il-Mument says Joseph Muscat is with his back to the wall over a 'crisis of corruption' It-Torca says Gozitan PN candidate Ryan Mercieca is in a mess for failing to produce documents related to EU funding to an association of NGOs. Former parliamentary secretary Michael Falzon used his political discretion to approve another €370,000 payment to the Gaffarenas at the same time as the controversial dealings on the Valletta property. Although never mentioned by the government, the National Audit Office accidentally stumbled upon a payment made to Joe Gaffarena just days before the €3.4 million deal struck with his son, Mark, on the property in Old Mint Street, Valletta. The new findings surfaced by chance during the NAO investigation on the Valletta property. While sifting through e-mails between the parliamentary secretary and the Land Department’s top brass, NAO officials encountered references to other payments made to a ‘Mr Gaffarena’. Questioned over these e-mails, Dr Falzon told the NAO these had nothing to do with the Old Mint Street property but referred to another payment given to Mark Gaffarena’s father for land that had been expropriated in 1987 and was still due to compensation. The NAO found that two payments of €184,691 each were effected on October 30, 2014 and January 12, 2015 to Gaffarena Holdings Ltd. Both Joseph and his son Mark hold shares in the company. The National Audit Office...

Rallies in Italy for gay civil unions

Thousands of Italians took to the streets in support of gay civil unions, ahead of a bill to be debated in parliament.  All over the country, rallies were held calling for the Italian government to legally recognise homosexual couples. Italy is the only major country in the West not to give same-sex couples any legal recognition, or protection on issues from pensions to parenthood. Some opponents say it's the right of the child to have heterosexual parents, but many at the rally say that's discrimination too.  "It is discrimination that also targets children because in Italy, like in all European countries, there are many children of homosexual couples, who have a good family life, they are children of their parents, parents who are of the same sex and the children consider them to be their parents. The time has come to get rid of these discriminations." The influence of the Catholic Church is seen as a strong brake and legislation has been held up by politicians of all stripes. The floor of the Senate will begin debate on a bill to legalise civil partnership for homosexuals as well as unmarried heterosexual couples on Thursday.

Gum busting costs €25,000 every year

The removal of chewing gum from public places currently costs €25,000 a year in the purchase of chemicals and brushes alone, apart from the salary of a full-time employee and the operating costs of a dedicated machine. Photo: Matthew Mirabelli

Government employees spent 900 hours last year removing 45,000 pieces of chewing gum from public places, highlighting the real costs of one of the most stubborn of public cleanliness issues. Last October, the government announced a new tax on chewing gum in an attempt to mitigate its environmental impact. The Finance Minister said the new tax, which also applies to plastic bags and drink containers, would send a strong environmental message and battle abuse. Similar measures have been in discussion in the UK for years as a means of tackling the unsightly blight of chewing gum stains on roads and pavements. Singapore famously went a step further in 1992, banning all importation and sale of chewing gum except for therapeutic purposes. The figures justify the concern. An Infrastructure Ministry spokeswoman said that gum removal currently costs €25,000 a year in the purchase of chemicals and brushes alone, apart from the salary of a full-time employee and the operating costs of a dedicated machine. “Cleaning chewing gum can only be done with specialised equipment,” Ramon Deguara, director of the cleansing directorate, said. “It is a highly delicate process involving the use of...

Michael Falzon was applauded this morning as he arrived at the Orpheum Theatre in Gzira for a Labour political activity addressed by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. He sat in the front row with other MPs. Dr Falzon is continuing to insist he did nothing irregular regarding the Gaffarena case and has pledged loyalty to the Labour Party. Yesterday he said that some time ago he had had a meeting with the Auditor General during which he told him that a person within his office was manipulating the audit office investigations so as to harm the government for political reasons. Yet nothing was done.  He said he would keep his seat in parliament but did not say whether he would contest the next general election. The crowd which filled the theatre also cheered when Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg addressed the meeting before Dr Muscat.

Muscat: 'We will tackle the issue of governance head-on' - thanks Mallia and Falzon for assuming their responsibilities

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this morning that the government would tackle the issue of governance head-on and, he added, the leader of the opposition had no moral authority to speak about the subject. In the past, he said, Dr Busuttil occupied important positions when some of the worst political and corruption scandals rocked Malta, and he did not speak up. Had he been man enough, he would have resigned at the time, but instead, he stood silent and could therefore be considered an accomplice. Furthermore, when he faced the first case known so far of people who reported corruption to him, Dr Busuttil  did not report to the police but told those before him that they should not have acted in the way they did, since they knew that the PN would lose the election.   Dr Muscat said it was the present government which, thanks to its record of change, enjoyed the moral authority to show that it could learn its own lessons, admit it was not perfect, and carry out more change, even in the areas of transparency and governance.  He could produce a whole list of scandals which took place when Dr Busuttil was in a position of responsibility, he said, but the people were not interested in...

Government court case against Gaffarerna 'designed to be lost' - Busuttil

The government’s court proceedings to recover the land transferred to Mark Gaffarena in the expropriation of a palazzo in Old Mint Street, Valletta was designed to be lost as it contained legal flaws, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said this morning. He noted that in the case filed by the Prime Minister, the court was being asked to order the reversal of a decision because of a “mistake”. “This court case was designed to be lost because the court will not reverse something because of a mistake. It is a big legal flaw. It is also ironic that the case was not only against Mr Gaffarena but also against the Land Department, which is the Prime Minister’s political responsibility. So it is a Joseph Muscat vs Joseph Muscat court case,” Dr Busuttil said. Addressing the party faithful in Sannat in Gozo, Dr Busuttil said it was also inconsistency at its best how the government has initiated court proceedings on the Gaffarena case but had withdrawn all court cases related to Australia Hall and Café Premiere. “This is surreal. There is no doubt that even the genuine Labourites are seeing this. Joseph Muscat cannot go on taking people for a ride. The court case was designed to be lost.” He...

Atletico Madrid surrendered top spot in La Liga to Barcelona when they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to 10-man Sevilla yesterday. There was little to choose between Atletico and Sevilla for the first hour at the Calderon, with the best chance falling to home forward Antoine Griezmann when he headed against a post on 53 minutes. Sevilla were rocked back when midfielder Vitolo earned a second caution and was sent off with around half an hour remaining and coach Unai Emery was dismissed from the bench for protests. With a man extra, Atletico poured forward in search of a winner but the Europa League holders’ defence held firm.
