Marsascala shootout - Charges against the accused now include second murder

Update  - Charges against Giuseppe Cutajar, the man taken to court following last month's Marsascala shootout, were upgraded to double murder today after the second victim, Stephen Zammit, 32 of Fgura, died in hospital last night. Cutajar had previously been accused of the murder of Kevin Gatt, who had died on the scene, and seriously injuring Zammit. The compilation of evidence against Cutajar was concluded this morning, with the courtdeciding there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. A request for bail was denied. The shootout took place on March 15 in a complex of underround garages.   Both victims were in a Hyundai  when they were shot.  Police Inspector James Grech, giving evidence in the compilation of evidence on March 28, told a court that when he arrived on the scene he went down a ramp towwards the underground garages and found a Hyundai Accent, an SUV and a BMW. The dead man was in the driving seat, slumped onto the passenger seat of the Hyundai while Zammit, who was injured, was crouched on the passenger seat with his back to the windscreen.
