Devotion and tradition at Good Friday processions

The sombre mood of Good Friday in processions being held this evening to commemorate the death of Christ reigned as many Maltese prayed in silence as they watched processions in many of Malta’s towns and villages this evening. The video above, taken by Paul Spiteri Lucas, shows participants in the Valletta procession during preparations and a part of the actual procession. The Valletta procession, one of the oldest in Malta is organised by the Archconfraternity of Sacred Cross. The procession was accompanied by La Valette Philharmonic Society. Statues, representing several moments from the passion of Christ, were followed by people in biblical costumes and people in chains, some of them barefoot, others crawling on their knees in sacrifice while bands played funeral marches. The activities, did not deter hawkers who took the opportunity to sell Easter sweets, such as carob candy, apostles’ bagels and the traditional figolli. Good Friday processions were also held last Sunday in Gharghur and Victoria.
