The police have issued an international arrest warrant against an Italian doctor who is wanted as part of court proceedings against surgeons in a malpractice case. The court proceedings were started last week following an inquiry into the death of a patient after he was operated in Malta in 2006. The proceedings are being held behind closed doors and may not be reported. The Italian doctor, Prof Marco Scarci, left Malta in 2007. He is alleged to have removed an artery instead of a vein from a  patient's leg during the early stages of a heart operation. The patient eventually died of complications four months later, despite various operations to save him. Scarci is expected to face charges of involuntary homicide. The police filed an application in court today to suspend time limitations in this case.
