The Government’s internal audit chief, Rita Schembri will face disciplinary board tasked with deciding whether to dismiss her in light of a damning inquiry report which said her position had been “seriously jeopardised”.
A board of the Public Service Commission – the constitutionally-appointed body responsible for appointments, promotions, and disciplinary procedures within the public service – is being set up to hear Ms Schembri’s case, a Government source told The Sunday Times.
Ms Schembri, who heads the Government’s Internal Audit and Investigation Department (IAID), had gone on long leave in October after a series of allegations surfaced in her regard.
A special board, chaired by Auditor General Anthony Mifsud, was appointed to look into the allegations. Last week it presented damning findings to the Office of the Prime Minister and the Finance Ministry, after a probe had been commissioned before the general election.
Among other things, the report revealed that Ms Schembri, a chartered accountant by profession, had given false evidence to the board under oath and also that she made use of sensitive information for personal use. It also confirmed the allegations levelled at...
