I watched The Big Debate organised by this newspaper. All parties fared well except over the issue of illegal immigration.
One of the questions to be answered by a “yes” or “no” was: “If in government would you push back illegal immigrants found in territorial waters?”
The first to answer was Joseph Muscat and he said yes depending on the stability of Libya. Lawrence Gonzi replied no. This clearly shows that Dr Muscat, if in government, would seek the interests of our country and wants to tackle the problem. On the other hand, Dr Gonzi again demonstrated his weakness on this issue and showed he is quite frightened by do-gooder critics.
The burden-sharing agreement reached with the EU has failed miserably and only a handful of immigrants have been taken in by member states. The US has taken in a substantial number, in an effort to help our country.
This means we have to fend for ourselves and it seems that only the Labour Party, if elected, will seriously tackle this problem. By answering no, Dr Gonzi shot himself in the foot.
