The final act of a court case on the fire that had destroyed the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta 25 years ago is expected to take place today. The fire, on March 25, 1987, was concentrated in Republic Hall. It started at about 6pm and raged on for about three hours, causing the roof to collapse. Luckily there were no injuries. Investigations revealed that the blaze began in the curtains on the stage and was allegedly caused by a laser beam that was meant to have been used in a show by Daihatsu UK Limited to launch five sports cars. The Prime Minister’s Office had instituted a civil court case for damages against Daihatsu UK Limited, Laser Point Limited and the man employed to operate the laser, Andrew James Creighton. Mr Justice Joseph Azzopardi is expected to deliver judgment on the case this morning.
