Turkey still top dinner choice for Christmas

The Christmas turkey is still a favourite with the Maltese.

Venison and wild boar might have replaced the traditional Christmas turkey on some tables but the bird is still a favourite with the Maltese. Hundreds start placing their orders for turkey from November even if, in recent years, shops have been stocking their shelves with other exotic animals. A spokeswoman for Miracle Foods Ltd said the younger generations were ready to go for something different and the food supplier has been stocking other game meat for the past 10 years. Today, people can choose from kangaroo to venison, capons, geese and even frogs’ legs for their main Christmas dish. Hundreds, however, still go for the traditional turkey. This was reiterated by a spokeswoman for Chef Choice who said the demand for other meat was not high. And the Maltese seem to be making a wise healthy choice. Charmaine Gauci, director of the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate, said fish and white meat remained the healthier options. While recommending the traditional turkey dish, those keeping a watchful eye on their waistline should opt for the turkey breast that is less fatty than the legs.
