A third of EU funds allocated to the army have been spent on the modernisation of the AFM's air wing, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said this afternoon. He was inaugurating a hangar that will house the two King Air aircraft bought recently by the army. The hangar is equipped with a crane that will enable soldiers to repair and maintain the aircraft without the need of outside assistance. The project costing some €20 million incorporates the two aircraft, the hangar and training. It was part-financed by the EU. At a short ceremony, Dr Gonzi thanked the soldiers for their work in the area of illegal immigration, the fight against drug trafficking and contraband.
