Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told a Commonwealth civil society meeting in London today that he wants to see global action to avoid a repetition of the Panama Papers. Dr Muscat said he was attending the meeting because he was facing the issue and wanted solutions for it.  The theme of the conference was ‘Tackling Corruption Together’.  Corruption was a global problem which needed global solutions, Dr Muscat said, and world leaders needed to cooperate in tackling it.  He said he had 'lived' the Panama Paper issue at close quarters and had acted decisively 'despite Opposition criticism.' He went on to list measures taken by the government, including the lifting of prescription on corruption cases involving politicians, the Whistleblower Act and the enactment of the party funding law. Dr Muscat will tomorrow attend a Summit Against Corruption hosted by UK Prime Minister David Cameron.
