Abattoir stench ‘could be incinerator’

The stench of animal carcasses in the vicinity of the abattoir has not been sourced to the slaughterhouse but to an incinerator that could be emitting unpleasant smells. A nauseating smell was reported at the beginning of last week in the area around Paola Hill, just behind Dock 7. However, it could not be detected near the front gates of the slaughterhouse in Biċċerija Street, Marsa. When this newspaper went on site, residents and workers said the stench was similar to that of a few years ago, when it was attributed to the incinerator in Marsa. In past years, residents and the Marsa local council have complained of foul smells emanating from the incinerator or the slaughterhouse with the arrival of summer. When contacted, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights ruled out the slaughterhouse. “We can assure you that the smell is not coming from the abattoir... In the past three years, the secretariat has invested thousands to upgrade and build new facilities at the abattoir, which made it compliant with EU standards,” a spokesman told this newspaper.
