Opposition environment spokesman Leo Brincat asked at a press conference this morning whether it was true that animals which may have suffered Foot and Mouth disease in North Africa were incinerated at the incinerator in Marsa.
Mr Brincat said he had received the information from informed sources, who also told him that Mepa appeared to know what had happened, and some sort of paper trail existed. He asked for how long this has been happening.
He said the authorities should explain, and the police should launch an investigation immediately, lest the case became time barred as happened in the case over the disposal of Mercaptan. An independent magisterial inquiry should also be held.
MEPA INVESTIGATING
Mepa in a reaction said it could confirm that it was alerted to this issue a few days ago. The Authority immediately started to investigate the case and carried out a site inspection.
"The Authority's investigations are currently ongoing and the public will be kept informed with the final outcome," it said.
