Malta's Constitution needs to be revised to continue reflecting the people's needs, President George Abela said this morning.
He was speaking during the unveiling of a monument dedicated to Malta's first President, Sir Anthony Mamo, at a garden behind St Helena's Church in Birkirkara, which was also inaugurated this morning.
Dr Abela said that the country's Constitution had been changed when Sir Anthony was President and it was now time for it to be revised once again.
No Constitution remained unchanged forever and as the guardian of the Constitution, the President had to facilitate debate on constitutional and institutional reforms and offer a platform for a free and studied expression of thoughts on the subject.
Sir Anthony, who became Malta's first President in December 1974 when Malta became a Republic, died on May 1, 2008 aged 99.
